PGCPS welcomed federal, state, county, and community leaders on Friday, June 12, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Phase One of the new Suitland High School campus. The $335 million modernization project represents a significant investment in the Suitland and Arnold Heights communities, serving as a milestone in the school district’s ongoing capital improvement initiative to provide updated learning environments.
The newly completed 389,108-square-foot comprehensive high school replaces the aging former facility at 5200 Silver Hill Road. The state-of-the-art building is designed to accommodate approximately 2,000 students in grades 9–12.
According to district officials, the campus design integrates modern technology with spaces tailored for both traditional academics and specialized career training.
Key Features of the Phase One Facility:
Held inside the school's new auditorium, the ceremony featured presentations, performances, and remarks from local dignitaries and education advocates.
The program commenced with the presentation of colors by the Suitland High School JROTC, followed by a performance of the national anthem by the Suitland High School Center for the Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Choir. Suitland High School Principal Maurice Wright and PGCPS Associate Superintendent Jason Washington welcomed guests to the new facility.
The ceremony also featured student performances and a student scholarship presentation.
The ribbon cutting marks the completion of the first phase of a three-part master plan managed by the PGCPS Department of Capital Programs. The project is being executed by the Turner-Corenic Joint Venture as general contractor and Cox Graae & Spack Architects.
When fully completed, the campus will house both the comprehensive high school program (1,500 students) and the specialized CVPA program (500 students).
Project Phase Target Completion Development Details:
Following the official ribbon cutting, district officials led attendees and community members on guided tours of the new educational wings and vocational spaces.
