PGCPS Wins Pocketalk Education Changemaker Award for Language Access
PGCPS has been honored with Pocketalk’s Education Changemaker Award for using secure translation technology to break down language barriers for students and families.
Serving more than 131,000 students who speak 123 languages, PGCPS staff are using Pocketalk devices to provide immediate, private communication in students’ home languages, ensuring every family can engage fully with schools whether in classrooms, offices, or health clinics.
“Pocketalk helps us ensure every family—regardless of language—can communicate, connect and feel supported in our schools,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Shawn Joseph.
After identifying challenges in confidential settings, PGCPS deployed Pocketalk in every school health office, allowing nurses to communicate directly with students about sensitive health concerns without relying on peers. The technology’s enterprise-level security, compliant with HIPAA, FERPA, GDPR, and COPPA, has also enabled use across front offices, counseling teams, security staff, and other support roles.
“Language should never be a barrier to care, connection, or belonging,” said Dr. Melissa Kanney, English Language Development Supervisor. “Pocketalk helps our students and families feel welcomed and understood from the moment they enter our schools.”
By leveraging Pocketalk, PGCPS strengthens family engagement, improves access to services, and advances its commitment to equity and inclusion—making sure every student and family feels seen, heard, and valued.
