As we prepare to welcome students back after the recent winter storms, we know you may have questions regarding the schedule and safety. Below is a guide to help you navigate our return to school on Wednesday, February 4.

1. What is the school schedule for Wednesday, February 4?
All PGCPS schools and offices will operate on a two-hour delay (CODE ORANGE). Please adjust your morning drop-off and bus stop routines accordingly.

2. Why is there a delay if the weather has cleared?
While school buildings and parking lots have been cleared and inspected, many neighborhood sidewalks and narrow residential streets remain icy or unplowed. The delay allows for better visibility and safer travel during the morning commute.

3. What if I feel it is still unsafe for my child to travel to school?
Safety is our top priority. Parents and guardians must determine whether conditions in your specific neighborhood are safe for your child.
-
If you choose to keep your child home: The absence will be excused.
-
Alternative: You may choose to transport your child yourself if you feel the bus route is unsafe, or your child can utilize the virtual extended learning materials available to all families.

4. Will school buses be running?
Yes, but please expect potential bus delays. In certain areas, buses may be unable to access narrow or heavily iced streets. We ask for your patience as our drivers navigate these conditions safely.

5. Are the school buildings safe and warm?
Yes. Yesterday, principals and building services teams inspected all facilities. Any issues regarding heating or safety were referred to central building services for immediate repair to ensure a welcoming learning environment.

6. What mental health resources are available for my child?
We recognize that the recent disruptions and weather events can be stressful. Support is available through:
-
School Staff:  Your child’s Professional School Counselor, School Psychologist, or Mental Health Clinician.
-
Hazel Health: At-cost mental health care for students. Sign up here
-
Immediate Support: * Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741
-
Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988

7. Will virtual learning be an option for future snow days?
Currently, Maryland law requires a formal plan for virtual learning. The Board of Education will hold an emergency meeting on Wednesday, February 4, to discuss a proposed virtual learning plan. This would allow for better continuity of learning during future weather disruptions.

8. How can I stay updated?
We will continue to monitor conditions closely. Please stay tuned to official PGCPS communication channels and our school website for any further adjustments.
