Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) believes that student participation in athletics enhances self-discipline, emotional maturity, and an appreciation for individual and team contributions. Furthermore, PGCPS acknowledges that well-structured, education-based athletic programs significantly boost school morale and community pride while fostering a sense of pride and honor among participants. However, for these athletic programs to occur, schools need sufficient athletic fields and facilities. This is where the Department of Capital Programs plays a vital role. The Department of Capital Programs understands that adequate athletic fields play a crucial role in shaping the overall educational experience at PGCPS, benefitting its students through improved physical health, enhanced social skills, and the development of teamwork and leadership qualities. Additionally, athletic fields serve as community hubs, bringing together students, parents, teachers, and residents from across the county, fostering a sense of pride and community spirit.
Through comprehensive facility assessments and engagement with schools and the communities they serve, PGCPS and the Department of Capital programs have recognized that many of the district's schools have worn-out and out-of-date athletic fields and facilities. Unfortunately, many communities within Prince George's County lack these spaces completely. PGCPS and Capital Programs have begun to address this through a special initiative to identify and modernize athletic fields throughout the district that desperately need improvement.
With the rise of more advanced sports technology and a push for sustainability, PGCPS has implemented new turf fields, improved lighting systems, and enhanced seating for spectators. The updated fields also reflect the district's focus on inclusivity, as they are designed to accommodate athletes with disabilities, allowing all students to participate in physical activities. These renovations have improved the quality of athletic programs and contributed to the overall aesthetic and function of the schools.
So far, the Department of Capital Programs has completed field renovations and improvements at ten (10) of the district's high schools. Most recently, the department completed renovations at Laurel and Bladensburg High Schools, celebrating each with a joyful ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, staff, community members, and elected officials. The department has identified and marked an additional eight (8) high school athletic fields to be renovated and modernized in the Capital Improvement Plan. The schools include Frederick Douglass, Crossland, DuVal, Central, Friendly, Parkdale, Largo, and Surrattsville High Schools.
Athletic fields in Prince George's County are integral to the educational and social fabric of the community. As the county continues to grow and evolve, the significance of these athletic fields will only increase. They serve as lasting symbols of community engagement and the importance of well-rounded education. The Department of Capital Programs is happily committed to improving these beloved spaces.
