Prepares, processes, monitors and reviews financial transactions, journal entries and supporting documents, ensuring accuracy and taking necessary action to correct errors
Analyzes and reconciles balance sheet and activity statement accounts;
Tracks, records and monitors all financial transactions of specific funds, as assigned, within the General and/or Specialized Funds’ group of accounts;
Assists in the monthly, quarterly and annual period close process, as assigned, including preparation of related schedules;
Provides information to auditors and management as needed, including audit schedules, and implements corrective action whenever indicated
Assists in the preparation of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) and Annual Financial Report for MSDE; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
Thorough knowledge of accounting theory, principles and application of such to a variety of accounting transactions and problems (i.e. account reconciliations, account analysis, preparation of journal entries, closing of accounts, preparation of year- end schedules, etc.);
Thorough knowledge of office methods and procedures;
Ability to analyze and evaluate accounting and financial problems and to develop recommendations for their solution;
Ability to prepare clear, concise and complete reports on complex financial activity;
Ability to document accounting processes and procedures applicable to local, state and federal regulations;
Proficiency in PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, reporting and database software programs;
Experience with Oracle E-Business Suite financial applications or other Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and reporting systems is desirable; and
Effective communication skills; the ability to plan and organize work assignments; and where necessary, assign and supervise work.Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting, Finance or a related field required, with a minimum of two (2) years progressively responsible professional experience as an accountant preferably in a government agency and ideally in a school system working with restricted programs.
