Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Interscholastic Athletics, the Athletic Trainer will plan, develop, monitor and assist in promoting health and safety across the interscholastic athletic program within individual high schools.  The incumbent of this position will work with the sports teams providing immediate care for sport injuries during practices and games, ensure athletes receive the necessary treatment, and provide proper rehabilitation and preventive measures of injuries.  The Athletic Trainer will openly communicate with emergency personnel, principals, athletic directors and parents as needed. The incumbent will hold professional development for coaches and athletic directors related to required trainings and certifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained by student-athletes during athletic events and practices;
  • Applies immediate first aid and makes recommendations for exercise or preventive measures for minor injuries;
  • Makes determinations regarding an injured players capability of continued participation in a game or practice;
  • Develops and oversees appropriate rehabilitation programs for athletes under the direction of a physician;
  • Maintains records of all athletic injuries reported by students as occurring during practices and games;
  • Develops an emergency plan for all stakeholders at assigned school(s);
  • Counsels and advises student athletes on health-related issues including nutrition and substance abuse;
  • Responds immediately to team situations and creates a safe environment for all student-athletes;
  • Maintains copies of physical forms, consent forms and any related forms/documents;
  • Keeps abreast of the Maryland laws pertaining to sport injuries and responsibilities and updates all athletes and coaches; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge in the prevention of injuries, evaluation and initial diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, athletic training, and treatment and rehabilitation;
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations and best practices involving health and safety in athletics;
  • Ability to provide training and professional development;
  • Ability to problem solve and think critically;
  • Ability to collaborate with different schools and community stakeholders;
  • Ability to schedule and coordinate activities in a timely manner;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Excellent human relations skills; and
  • Ability to work flexible hours and days as determined by the needs of the student athletic program.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in athletic training required; Master’s degree preferred.  Previous clinical experience as a certified athletic trainer preferred.

Certification:

National Athletic Trainer Association (NATA) Board of Certification Athletic Trainer in good standing required. Current or eligible for State of Maryland Board of Physicians Athletic Training License and Evaluation and Treatment Protocols with Supervising Physician. Current CPR and First Aid certification required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.

The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

Additional Information:

Highly demanding and fast-paced environment; frequently required to work long hours and weekends.  Annual leave may be limited during specified timeframes.  Local and non-local travel may be required.
