Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Coordinating Supervisor, the Athletics Compliance Coordinator provides leadership, oversight and coordination of the planning, implementation, monitoring and administration of the interscholastic middle and high school athletic programs.  The incumbent of this position ensures compliance of the systemic, state and national processes and procedures related to interscholastic athletics and will review and evaluate compliance issues and concerns.  The incumbent of this position provides procedural assistance, case management and support to other unit staff.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitors and verifies that all middle and high schools are in compliance with systemic, state and national regulations; supports Principals, Athletic Directors and supervisors with verification of the certification and compliance of coaches and athletic department personnel;
  • Manages, oversees and provides support for the online registration for athletics, including coordination and communication with schools to ensure roster compliance and student-athlete eligibility;
  • Conducts, attends and prepares for Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association (MPSSAA) and PGCPS appeals and conduct hearings; assists with the overall appeals on different athletic-related issues that arise and facilitates hearings involving a panel to hear and render decisions pertaining to the rules and regulations of the program;
  • Investigates and concludes athletic transfers, residency hearings and athletic violations;
  • Assists with the documentation and monitoring of procedural and regulatory compliance of the Athletic Trainers;
  • Assists in monitoring the athletics programs to ensure compliance with Title IX, MPSSAA regulations, PGCPS policies and regulations, and health and safety initiatives; serves as a liaison regarding gender equity reporting;
  • Prepares and distributes correspondence and other information to keep Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainers, coaches and other personnel fully informed of all regulations and standards related to compliance;
  • Documents and monitors verification of coach certifications and compliance, including SafeSchools completion, eligibility rosters, team rosters, volunteer forms, coach contracts and any other requirements;
  • Plans and coordinates the operational regulations, policies and procedures within the athletics department;
  • Cooperates with Internal Audit and supports audits by providing requested documentation and data;
  • Collaborates with Human Resources pertaining to the hiring and termination of coaches and proper protocols for conducting interviews;
  • Notifies and works closely with the Office of General Counsel on athletics-related issues that may arise and require legal correspondence;
  • Utilizes technological resources to ensure and track compliance across the programs and effectively communicates with all stakeholders; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations governing athletics;
  • Knowledge of current research and trends in athletics;
  • Working knowledge of the Google platform, Canvas, Microsoft suite and other related software for account management, student and staff information, coach and athletic department compliance, etc.;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills;
  • Ability to work effectively with Principals, Athletic Directors, Athletic Trainers, coaches community members and organizations to ensure accountability with system-wide processes and regulations;
  • Ability to conduct effective meetings for a wide variety of groups;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks on short notice with changing priorities;
  • Ability to develop and facilitate presentations regarding athletic program related topics and regulations;
  • Ability to gather, organize, analyze, and report information and data to individuals/groups of varying sizes;
  • Demonstrated competence in the ability to provide timely and accurate information needed to inform executive decisions;
  • Ability to quickly analyze problems and recommend workable solutions including implementation;
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information; and
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to evolving job roles and diversity of projects; excellent problem-solving skills and ability to develop appropriate options and actions.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in athletics, athletic training, secondary education or related field required. A minimum of 5 (five) years of successful experience with a strong compliance background required; increasingly responsible athletics-related experience preferred.

Certification:

Holds or ability to obtain the Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) certification.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

May provide guidance and direction to assigned personnel.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.

Additional Information:

Evening and weekend work may be required, especially during pre- and post-seasons of each sport.
