Under the direction of the Electrical Maintenance Foreman II, the Fire Alarm Technician performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of fire alarm systems located in schools, buildings and on bus lots throughout the school system. An employee in this class performs a variety of skilled tasks in accordance with standard practices of the electronics and fire alarm trades. The incumbent is allowed latitude for independent judgment because of the technical nature of the position. Work is usually performed independently, but reviewed in terms of the accomplishment of objectives.
>Troubleshoots, diagnoses trouble and makes minor repairs; replaces electronic fire alarm systems as required;
Analyzes and maintains all fire alarm records in order to set up service calls and establish work priorities;
Maintains and repairs fire alarm or similar reporting systems;
Reads, understands and interprets codes (including National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), National Electrical Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and local codes), standards, blueprints, construction drawings and electrical diagrams;
Tests fire alarms using a variety of standard and specialized test equipment;
Responds to office or school sites when equipment failure is indicated; performs preventive maintenance on fire alarm equipment;
Meets with county and private contractors to supply technical information on fire alarm equipment; and evaluates new installations by contractors;
Completes assigned work orders and documents in School Dude;
Orders necessary materials using material requisitions form, and
Performs other duties as assigned.
Thorough knowledge of fire alarm systems, their uses and maintenance;
Good knowledge of electronics and electrical theory; ability to detect by inspection defects in equipment or systems and to make the proper adjustments and repairs;
Skilled in the use of hand tools, test equipment and materials of the trade; and
Manual dexterity.
Completion of high school diploma or GED with a minimum of four (4) years of electrical experience with substantial training or experience with electronic maintenance and repair of fire alarm systems.
>Possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland motor Vehicle Operator’s License with driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle. Possession of a Fire Alarm Systems certification from the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET).
Oversees the work of crews composed of Electronics Technicians and Trades Helpers.
