Position Summary:

The Internship Coordinator reports to the principal in a high school and facilitates internships for students in research related to senior projects.  The position is responsible for developing relationships with external agencies, securing internship positions and monitoring the internships for efficacy.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Handles orientation and enrollment for students who participate in the school-year internship program, which includes work experience with local employers and/or research institutions;
  • Teaches professional workshops that help students connect their internship experiences with academic learning and career exploration and planning;
  • Coordinates with school administrators, roster chairs, faculty, and counseling staff to ensure that students successfully participate in the school-year internship program;
  • Coordinates with employers and troubleshoots workplace problems;
  • Communicates with parents as necessary to support the program coordinator's and employer's work with students;
  • Refers students needing social or academic help to appropriate service providers;
  • Facilitates timecard collection for grading purposes, if interns are paid by the employer, offers technical assistance when needed;
  • Maintains accurate data, records, and files to track the activities, achievements, participation, progress, and status of individual students;
  • Collects data for analysis, evaluation, and program improvement;
  • Performs site visits at least once per quarter;
  • Acts as a liaison between the school and the workplace/research institution; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in teaching Research Practicum and/or successful experience working in a research laboratory;
  • Knowledge of the Science and Tech program and students targeted for school-year internship participation;
  • Experience working with high-school-age youth;
  • Experience providing instruction in a classroom setting in research;
  • Knowledge of the school district and students targeted for school-year internship participation;
  • Demonstrated professional development experience at the school and/or system level;
  • Ability to work with school teams to exercise initiative in carrying out duties/responsibilities;
  • Demonstrated computer/educational technology skills (including proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel);
  • Strong interpersonal and human relations skills; and
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking and listening skills.

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree (required) and master's degree (preferred) in science, engineering or mathematics.  A minimum of two years of professional experience working in a private, government, or not-for-profit sectors.  A minimum of one year successful teaching experience working in a school-based or a college/university setting required; high school experience preferred.

 

Certification:

Holds or is eligible for a professional certificate in science, mathematics, or technology education issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct supervisory responsibilities.
