The Professional School Counselor provides counseling services that are comprehensive in scope, preventive in design and developmental in nature in the areas of academic achievement, college and/or career readiness and personal/social development for all students. The Professional School Counselor acts as a change agent and student advocate helping ensure access and equity for all students supporting the system’s overall mission.
Provide individual and group counseling to students to assist students in knowing their own learning patterns and develop and plan their personal educational experiences; conduct counseling and guidance learning activities in the classroom
Provide system support by identifying students who require special consideration and attention and initiates or arranges for modified curricula programs or education alternatives designed to motivate and contribute to productive school experiences;
Provide counseling to families to assist students with school and social adjustment problems; consults with law enforcement agencies regarding students as necessary;
Collaborate with CASA de Maryland staff to provide prevention and intervention services, refer students to various programs, social service and governmental agencies, support groups and other community resources as appropriate;
Assist students in establishing concrete, behavioral plans aimed at problem resolution;
Implement an effective referral process in collaboration with parents, administrators, teachers, and other school personnel;
Assist in the supervision of students in the school;
Coordinate with other support services staff to address student needs and support student's success;
Provide school wide prevention and intervention strategies and counseling services;
Participates in school management teams and shares responsibility for the total school program as a part of individual planning and systems support;
Counsel pupils when academic and adjustment problems arise;
Confer with parents and students regarding progress/problems of assigned students; arrange and participate in teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences as necessary;
Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, materials and facilities;
Establish and implements a counseling and guidance program which meets students competencies;
Supervise the school college and career readiness advisory program; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
Demonstrated knowledge of national, state and local school counseling standards and adheres to professional and ethical standards of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA).Thorough knowledge of Prince George’s County Policies and Procedures;
Demonstrates the use of developmentally appropriate small group and individual techniques that are relevant to the topic and to the students’ needs and concerns;
Knowledge of growth and developmental stages of adolescents;
Ability to read, take notes, and interpret written materials;
Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with staff, students, and parents;
Ability to use a computer and other technological equipment;
Ability to use the computer for on-line scheduling;
Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to both large and small groups; and
Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with many different types of individuals and groups.
Master’s degree in School Counseling, with two years of experience as a school counselor preferred; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
