Student Device Use in PGCPS

Student Devices in PGCPS

Technology access plays an integral part in the instructional programming in Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS). K-12 grade students have access to a PGCPS computing device to support their learning at school, and in some cases at home. The computing device available to most students is a chromebook. Students in certain special programs, such as visual arts and others, may use a different computing device such as an iPad or other tablet, a Macbook or Windows computer.

Students who choose to use their own personal device in schools may utilize a chromebook connected to the PGCPS network, with the understanding that PGCPS holds no responsibility for loss or theft. PGCPS employees will not be responsible for troubleshooting and repair of personal chromebooks. Low cost, used Chromebooks, in good condition, can be found at a number of large, national retailers for students and families who are interested in utilizing their own chromebook in school.

Device Models in Schools

There are two models for how devices are issued at schools,  based on the principal’s selection:

  1. Take Home Model: Students are assigned a device, charger, and protective case that can be used at home and at school. The student is responsible for bringing the device from home to school and back to support their learning.
  2. In-School/Cart-Based Model: Students may use an available device that resides in a mobile cart in classrooms throughout the school. Students may be issued a device to use temporarily or throughout the day to support their learning. In most cases students leave the devices at school for regular use.*

*A parent or guardian may formally request a device be assigned for use at home in the In-School/Cart-Based Model. Once assigned, the student is responsible for bringing the device from home to school and back to support their learning.

Device Care and Damage Fees

In alignment with PGCPS Administrative Procedure 0700, Acceptable Use Guidelines, all students are fully responsible for the proper care and condition of their PGCPS device, network and digital resources provided. Any damage or loss should be reported immediately.

Parents/guardians may be held financially responsible for the repair or replacement of the electronic device if it's lost, stolen, or damaged due to negligence or misuse based on the tiered device damaged fees. Fees may be modified, in accordance with market rates for replacement parts

Student Device Usage Agreement

The Student Device Usage Agreement will be issued annually and governs the student use of PGCPS issued computing devices. Students are expected to abide by the terms of this user agreement. The device agreement will be issued by your child’s school. It is linked below for reference, only.
