Administrative Procedure 0410 - Guidelines for Behavior of Coaches and Athletes During Athletic Events

I. Purpose

To provide administrative procedures to ensure high standards of behavior by athletic coaches and athletes.

II. Background

All coaches and athletes in Prince George’s County Public Schools should seek and maintain the highest possible level of behavior during athletic events. Interscholastic athletics are important and beneficial to students. Participants are expected to follow the rules and guidelines of Prince George’s County Public Schools.

III. Procedures

To ensure that these high standards are maintained, the procedures listed below must be followed:

  1. Any punitive measures levied against a player, a coach and/or other team/school personnel (manager, scorer, timer, administrator, etc.) by a game official shall result in removal from the contest.
  2. A coach, substitute, other team/school personnel disqualified for acting in an unsportsmanlike manner by the game officials, per National Federation of High School Rules (NFHS), shall receive a one (1) game suspension. Examples of behavior by players that may lead to disqualification for unsportsmanlike conduct include, but are not limited to: substitute players leaving the bench or designated team area, or a player using profanity during warm up drills. The suspension may include all or part of a team.
  3. A coach, player or other team/school personnel who is ejected from an athletic contest will automatically receive one (1) game suspension from coaching or playing in the next scheduled contest. A coach or other team/school personnel who is serving a suspension may not attend the contest or be on the site of the contest. A coach may allow a player who is serving a suspension to attend the contest, as long as they are seated with the team under the coach’s supervision.
  4. A coach, player or other team/school personnel who is ejected from two (2) contests during the same season will automatically be suspended for the remainder of that season.
