  • Accurately identify students who need more resources to be
  • successful
  • Improve the education of English Learners (ELs)
  • Improve the education of students with disabilities
  • Provide supports for students attending schools with a high concentration of students living in poverty
  • Enhance student health services

More Resources to be Successful

In an effort to close the achievement gap and expand student opportunities, Pillar 4 strives to offer more support to students who need it the most. This includes new academic programs, social services, and mental and behavioral health services at school and home. Varied community partnerships meet student behavioral health needs and develop models for delivering and expanding behavioral health services and supports to students. Additionally, historically underserved students from every school system will receive supports that aid their progress and academic achievement.

There is increased funding for students with disabilities and English language learners. First, proper identification of students is a priority. Additionally, PGCPS will continue to address any learning loss as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the district aims to increase parent engagement and student attendance rates.

Community Schools

PGCPS has 109 community schools with the following components:

  • Community School Coordinators (CSC) – Every community school has one coordinator. The person in this role is an employee of PGCPS who acts as a liaison between the school and the community to establish and maintain partnerships that support students, families and the local community. The salaries and benefits are funded through this grant.
  • Health Care Practitioners – A registered nurse (RN) is assigned to each community school.
  • Wraparound Services – Wraparound services and other programs are specifically identified based on the results of each school’s respective needs assessment and will follow the pre-approval process currently in effect for school spending. Allowable activities may include:
    • extended learning opportunities for students, English classes for parents/guardians, language classes for staff to help them communicate better with their parents/guardians, family field trips to provide academic and cultural enrichment, and other services that will support students’, staff, and parents’/guardians’ well-being.
  • Mental Health Support – Each Community School has at least one full-time mental health therapist. The therapist will serve students and families and will also conduct professional development for staff.

Supplemental Instruction

Primary learners (K-3) who struggle with reading and mathematics skills are provided with one-on-one and small group instruction that offers personalized instruction for increased academic achievement.
