Welcome to Carole Highlands Elementary School

We are excited to get going and can’t wait to see the children in our classrooms! The Carole Highlands Teachers & Staff is focused on preparing and implementing lessons that align with our new curriculum. Our new Superintendent - Mr. Millard House II, has stepped in and is anxious to work hard to take PGCPS to the next level.   At CHES, we will have a continued emphasis on mathematics while we refine our work with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects! It all fits together and I do believe we are going in the right direction for our students and their future learning!

I hope you are enjoying a wonderful summer. I also hope you are relaxed, recharged, and ready to start a new school year. I am so delighted that you are part of our amazing learning community. I welcome and value your positive energy and dedication to excellence in education, and I look forward to working with you and your children.  Please read the entire letter carefully as it contains important information to ensure the first days and weeks of school get off to a great start.

Please continue to check the CHES website for important information. You should also register for the SchoolMAX Family Portal and SchoolMessenger to receive direct messages and important announcements about our school and PGCPS.

Warmest Regards,

Ms. JeVivvien Ray, Ed.S

Important Dates & Orientation Day

Arrival & Dismissal Information

Arrival & Dismissal Procedures

We will continue to prevent large gatherings during arrival and dismissal. Students will follow last year’s procedure by entering through the front and cafeteria doors of the building upon arrival. They will be dismissed directly from their classrooms each day. Parents will be asked to follow last year’s procedures for arrival to maintain student, staff, and other parents’ safety. Specifically, parents should encourage students to walk to school in the morning. One reason is to promote exercise and wellness. Walking is a good way to stay active and fit. Secondly, it may reduce the bottlenecking that occurs at the corner when parents double park their cars to let children out. It is just not safe!  Dismissal will be staggered to prevent crowds;  Pre-Kindergarten students will be in their room and MUST be signed out - do not rush the teachers because you are in a hurry.  Please be flexible, the format may change as the County makes changes. Our goal is to ensure that we keep our students SAFE.

Lastly and very importantly, please do NOT park or idle your car along the yellow curb of the parking lot. This thoroughfare is reserved for emergency and county vehicles needing access to the school.

Attendance Information

School attendance plays a major part in student academic success. Too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school and make it harder to learn how to read and master foundational reading and math skills. Building good habits in elementary helps children learn early that going to school on time; every day is important. Daily attendance will be closely monitored. The County attendance procedure will be fully implemented. Students who miss more than one day per month are at risk of not meeting the State attendance requirement.

To ensure students arrive everyday on time, set a regular bedtime and morning routine. Be sure to lay out uniforms and backpacks the night before. Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments or extended trips during school days. Remember to make back-up plans for getting your child to school if something comes up.

Building Visits

Building Visits

We do ask that if you wish to visit your student's classroom, please consider making an appointment, students may be testing or on a field trip.  Appointments can be made by contacting the front office at 301-431-5660. At the time of visit, please adhere to the following guidelines:

    • Masks are not mandatory, however, if you wish to wear one, you can.
    • Bring a government-issued, photo ID.
    • Do not park your vehicle along the yellow curb, please park in the parking lot.

Computers & Student Accounts

Computers & Log-ins

Student usernames remain the same. In most cases the username is the student’s first name, hyphen, then last name. All passwords will be reset to CHES followed by the student’s two-digit birth month and two-digit birth date by September 1, 2021.

    • For example, Jose Jones’ birthday is June 25th. In most cases the log-in would be jose-jones; his password is CHES0625

If this basic formula does not work, please contact your child’s teacher for assistance. Students will continue using Chromebooks and digital tools for instructions. All students will be required to bring their school devices daily.

Using IDM Self Service for Student Accounts

Students are able to manage their own accounts using the IDM Self Service Portal*. Parents can also assist students with resetting their passwords. View the helpful video on this page for more information.

*Due to necessary increased account security IDM Self Service must be used on a PGCPS network.
