Safe schools are foundational to student success! While the nation observes National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day on February 15, PGCPS has designated February 27 as our inaugural Safety and Security Professionals Day, honoring more than 400 dedicated individuals who work behind the scenes to maintain safe, supportive learning environments.
Our security team is a diverse network of experts. From Safe Passage Coordinators who watch over students on their way to school to Security Systems Maintenance Technicians who keep critical technology running, every member plays an essential role. This team includes:
Field and Compliance Supervisors
Lead Safety and Security Counselors and Assistants
Special Investigators
Alarm Dispatchers and Centralized Support Staff
This year, we are extending a special "thank you" to our longest serving team members who have a combined nearly 110 years of service!
Vicki Revell (Alarm Dispatcher): 41 years of service.
Kevin Carter (Security Systems Maintenance Technician): 35 years of service.
Horace Avent (Safety and Security Assistant): 31 years of service.
Data That Delivers: A Safer PGCPS
Thanks to our layered approach to safety, the diligent work of our security professionals and the implementation of new safety measures, we are seeing real results:
Significant Incident Reduction: We have seen a 65% decrease in major incidents, including fights and threats.
Enhanced Technology: Currently, 100% of PGCPS high schools and 48% of K-8 and middle schools are equipped with advanced security enhancement devices.
Contraband Control: The transition to mandatory clear backpacks for all high school and select middle school students has led to a significant decrease in contraband on campus.
Student Peace of Mind: According to our 2025-26 survey, student safety perceptions have hit 70% in grades 4–5 and risen to 50% in grades 6–12.
Looking Ahead: FY27 and Beyond
We aren't stopping here. PGCPS is proposing significant investments to ensure our schools remain sanctuaries for learning. Our future roadmap includes:
$2.45M for expanded safety personnel.
$1.9M for AI-enabled security technology.
Visual alert systems in 100% of schools by FY28.
Beyond physical protection, we remain dedicated to the "Support" in our mission, providing on-site counselors, social workers, and free teletherapy via Hazel Health.
To our 400+ security professionals: Thank you for your vigilance, your heart, and your dedication to the PGCPS family!
