Welcome to our Parent Guide on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education. PGCPS is using AI to enhance learning. The district aims to use AI in a safe, equitable, innovative, and intentional way. AI is transforming how students learn, and this website is your resource for understanding its impact. Discover the potential benefits and risks of AI, and learn how to support your child in navigating this evolving landscape. Together, we can harness the power of AI to enhance your child's learning experience.
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is like a very smart computer helper that can learn and solve problems. Just as students learn from their teachers and experiences, AI systems learn from the information we give them. They can help us with many tasks, from suggesting what movie to watch next to helping scientists make important discoveries.
Think of AI as a digital student that gets better at tasks through practice. For example:
When you ask your phone to set a reminder, AI helps understand your words
When a video game character responds to your actions, that's AI making decisions
When a website recommends books you might like based on what you've read before, AI is helping make those suggestions
While AI can do amazing things, it's important to remember that it's a tool created by humans to help make our lives easier. It doesn't think exactly like people do, and it needs careful guidance from human experts to work properly.
At our school district, we believe in teaching students about AI so they can understand this technology that is becoming more common in our daily lives. We want our students to learn how to use AI tools responsibly while developing their own critical thinking and creativity.
AI Partnerships
PGCPS is not working in isolation to make decisions around the implementation of Ai usage in the classroom. We have partnered with AI EDU, Khan Academy, and Advanced Learning Partnerships.
aiEDU: Providing professional opportunities for stakeholders groups
Khan Academy: Exploring Ways To Utilize Ethical Use of AI With Students Via Khanmigo
Advanced Learning Partnerships: Providing guidance for crafting policy & professional learning for leaders
In general terms, bias is a prejudice in favour of or against something — sometimes without knowing. It can lead to issues like online hate.
With AI, bias refers to the unfair or unequal impact of some AI systems on specific groups of people. This is due to data or design that provides biased information to the AI.
