Homework

District Heights Elementary School recognizes homework as an integral and necessary part of the educational program of each student.  The purpose of homework is to reinforce, supplement, and enrich work done in the classroom, to promote competency in skills, and to help students learn to manage time effectively.

At the beginning of the year, teachers send home specific guidelines for the completion of homework.  In Prekindergarten and Kindergarten, responsibility sheets (located in blue folders) are given to each student daily to help communicate homework assignments and school behavior.  Please read, sign and return this responsibility sheet daily.  Grades 1-5 will be assigned an agenda book as their homework assignment and communication tool.  In Grades 1-5, the agenda book will be used daily to record homework assignments and to serve as a means of communication between parents and teachers.  As part of the homework component, all students are required to read at least twenty minutes a day.  Students must have their parents sign a reading log for verification.  We recommend that definite home study habits be developed and maintained each day.

Please read and enforce the following:

  • Establish a set time when homework will be completed.
  • Provide the proper environment, light, air and free of distractions.

  • Provide the necessary supplies.

  • Offer assistance in the form of guidance.  Do not complete an assignment for your child.

  • Check and sign the responsibility sheet/agenda daily.

  • Agenda Books are the first line of daily communication between home and school. Please check your student’s agenda book each evening for assignments and teacher notes. Additionally, each teacher has an email link on our school website.
