Meet Dr. Sandra Bunns, Principal of Judge Sylvania Woods ES

Greetings, Judge Sylvania Woods ES Parents, Families, and Community,

It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that I write this letter to announce that I am serving as Acting Principal of JSWES effective July 1, 2023. I am truly honored to accept this new role. I look forward to continuing to grow this amazing school community through the work that Principal Barber-Wehrman and I started together as captain and co-captain of this ship for the past seven years. We have a strong school culture here synonymous with excellence, dedication, commitment, and collaboration. I will continue to build on our foundation and keep the ship steering in the right direction through collaborative and collective knowledge and creativity of our scholars, staff and families. We will continue traditional successes and explore opportunities that provide further growth for staff and scholars to enhance educational experiences.

With 20 years of experience in PGCPS, I remain committed to a high quality teaching and learning environment. Safety and security of all scholars and staff have been a focal point that drives my “why” each day. Some of my career highlights at JSWES include building a school community where everyone feels welcomed with a sense of belonging, reducing chronic absenteeism to a remarkable low of 15% pre-pandemic, oversight of an effective PBIS system resulting in fewer discipline problems, promoting a post-pandemic reopening hybrid structure, and providing our scholars with technology devices during distance learning.

Here are a few fun facts about me. I am married to Dale, a wonderful hard-working man who loves and values education as much as I do. Many of my scholars have heard me talk about my son Bryson who is a product of PGCPS attending college at North Carolina A&T State University majoring in engineering. We have lived in the Bowie area for over 25 years. My husband grew up in Prince George’s County MD while I am a small town southern girl from NC. When I am not hard at work, you can find me serving at church, reading, spending time with my wonderful family, taking trips to the Shenandoah Valley, and visiting my family in NC. We love Prince George’s County and its diverse communities and all it has to offer.

Although many of the families already know me, I know there still might be a feeling of eagerness, anxiety, and uncertainty. I will be in touch in the very near future to schedule a variety of meetings so that we can get to know each other better and you can provide information and input that will be used to help me continue steering this ship in the right direction. Think about the following: What more can we do together for our school community and how can we continue to support you and your scholars? I will work hard to keep the trust and respect as your Acting Principal. Our ultimate goal is developing the best children that we possibly can in school, at home, and in the world around them so that they will continue to grow as productive global citizens. I am looking forward to an awesome 2023-2024 school year!

Es con gran entusiasmo y emoción que escribo esta carta para anunciar que me desempeño como directora interina de JSWES a partir del 1 de Julio de 2023. Me siento verdaderamente honrada de aceptar este nuevo cargo. Espero seguir haciendo crecer esta increíble comunidad escolar a través del trabajo que la Directora

Barber-Wehrman y yo comenzamos juntos como capitán y co-capitán de este barco durante los últimos siete años. Aquí tenemos una fuerte cultura escolar sinónimo de excelencia, dedicación, compromiso y colaboración.

Con 20 años de experiencia en PGCPS, sigo comprometido con un entorno de enseñanza y aprendizaje de alta calidad. Algunos de los aspectos más destacados de mi carrera en JSWES incluyen la construcción de una comunidad escolar donde todos se sientan bienvenidos con un sentido de pertenencia, la reducción del ausentismo crónico a un mínimo notable del 15 % antes de la pandemia, la supervisión de un sistema PBIS efectivo que genera menos problemas de disciplina, la promoción de un estructura híbrida de reapertura posterior a la pandemia y proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes dispositivos tecnológicos durante el aprendizaje a distancia.

Aquí hay algunos datos divertidos sobre mí. Estoy casada con Dale, un maravilloso hombre trabajador que ama y valora la educación tanto como yo. Muchos de mis estudiantes me han escuchado hablar sobre mi hijo Bryson, quien es un producto de PGCPS que asiste a la Universidad en la Universidad de North Carolina A&T State University con especialización en ingeniería. Hemos vivido en el área de Bowie por más de 25 años. Mi esposo creció en el condado de Prince George, MD, mientras que yo soy una chica sureña de un pequeño pueblo de North Carolina. Cuando no estoy trabajando duro, puede encontrarme sirviendo en la iglesia, leyendo, pasando tiempo con mi maravillosa familia, haciendo viajes al Shenandoah Valley y visitando a mi familia en NC. Nos encanta el condado de Prince George y sus diversas comunidades y todo lo que tiene para ofrecer.
