Welcome to 2025 - 2026 School Year!

The Elements of Art: A Creative Journey Through Expression

This school year, our Visual Arts Program at Judith P. Hoyer Montessori has been joyfully centered around the theme “The Elements of Art.” From the youngest creators in Primary to our thoughtful Middle School artists, every class has been engaging with the foundational building blocks of art in imaginative and meaningful ways.

Our Primary students began the year celebrating fall with Picasso-Style Pumpkins! Using shapes, lines, and bold color, they explored the concept of abstract art and self-expression. It was amazing to watch their confidence bloom as they realized that art doesn’t always have to “look real” to be beautiful, it simply has to feel alive with imagination.

In Lower Elementary, students are learning an original song written to help them memorize and understand each of the seven elements, line, shape, color, texture, form, space, and value. The classroom has been filled with joyful singing as students connect music and art to reinforce learning. To complement the song, they are creating vibrant Elements of Art posters that showcase their understanding through drawings, patterns, and mixed media designs.

Our Upper Elementary scholars recently completed a project titled Birds of Creation, inspired by the vibrant work of Salvadoran folk artist Fernando Llort in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Through this exploration, students learned about Llort’s symbolic use of color, pattern, and spiritual imagery to honor everyday life. One of our students, born in El Salvador, created a particularly delightful piece, her Bird of Creation was a heartfelt tribute to her culture, family, and heritage. It was a moment of pride and connection that truly embodied the spirit of our multicultural art community.

Meanwhile, our Middle School students have been exploring aa range of art mediums and styles guided by their personalized Art Road Map. This project allows each student to journey through various creative destinations, painting, sculpture, digital art, and mixed media, at their own pace. They are learning to reflect on their artistic growth, set goals, and make independent choices that express their individual voices. The Art Road Map has transformed the classroom into a hub of innovation, collaboration, and discovery.
