Kenilworth Elementary AUTISM Program believes that every person on the autism spectrum is unique and their needs will be reflected differently. Challenges experienced interacting socially and communicating with others are common among students on the spectrum, and will have an impact on every aspect of their lives. These challenges can lead to levels of stress, anxiety and depression that are much higher than for other students. The school responds to the needs of the students with special concerns. This school year 2019-2020, Kenilworth ES provides a sensory room and holds a quarterly parents forum.

A sensory room is a quiet space dedicated to stimulating, developing and relaxing the senses. It allows pupils the freedom and autonomy to explore the environment for themselves, In their own time, using all of their senses. It provides a therapeutic environment for students with autism and other special educational needs.
Sensory equipment can be used to develop a range of physical skills. The sensory room can act as a calming space for students experiencing emotional or behavioral difficulties. It can help students learn to manage their emotions In a controlled environment. KES supports the Idea that much research exists about the Importance of parent Involvement In education. The research overwhelmingly Indicates that parent Involvement not only positively affects student achievement, It contributes to higher quality education and better performance of schools overall. Both students and schools benefit when parents are Involved In education.
Students have a more positive attitude toward school and their behavior Is better. The school Is excited to welcome parents to the quarterly parents forum. These Initiatives reinforce the notion that social-emotional learning has a critical role to play In learning, as well as In school attendance, classroom behavior, and academic engagement for all students. The heavy focus on academic aspects of the curriculum and the demand for data-driven accountability.

The mission of the ESOL Program is to provide appropriate, effective English language instruction and to facilitate cultural awareness for English language learners, grades K-12, while participating as collaborative partners in the students' educational experiences.

The music program at Kenilworth Elementary School covers music history and culture, a wide variety of types of music, note-reading and beat-counting, and even composing lyrics. We sing, we play instruments, we listen to recordings and live performances, and we learn about the connections between music and our cultural history.

The Dream Team is a counselor-led mentoring program that encourages academic and social growth by students practicing with test-taking skills, study skills, leadership skills, and team-building activities.
G.O.L.D. stands for Generating Outstanding Leadership Development
This group works with students to have a peaceful, safe learning environment. Each day they poll the teachers to make sure it has been a peaceful day and then the number of peaceful days is posted in the main hall for all to see. Incentives are offered for reaching the 50, 100, and 150 day markers. The students also get leadership training quarterly through PGCPS with community leaders.
Groups are organized as needs arise. Some examples of groups might be to help with organization
and study skills, dealing with emotions such as anger, dealing with grief, making friends, assertiveness, etc.

To help facilitate writing for a purpose, the Wee Deliver team is an in-school mail delivery service for students to write notes or letters to their friends or teachers.
Our reading program at Kenilworth utilizes the PGCPS Reading Department's Reading Progress Guides which are aligned with the Common Core.
Literacy Circle is a classroom activity that occurs monthly (3 times a year in Kindergarten). Students read books from a selected genre and then complete activities in preparation for sharing their reading experiences with their classmates.
In addition to general educators, we also have the services of a Reading Specialist, and two supplemental reading support teachers who work with small groups.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Fair is an annual event. Students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades work together to produce a class project. This affords them the opportunity to learn and practice the Scientific Method with the teacher modelling. Students in grade 3 work in small groups under the supervision of their classroom teacher to produce projects, in preparation for their individual projects in the coming years. Students in 4th and 5th grade will each complete a STEM fair project. They receive instruction, guidance, and feedback on the various stages of the project, but complete most of the work at home. Parents are encouraged to get involved with their child's projects, helping where appropriate.
STEM Fair projects are displayed and judged at our yearly Kenilworth STEM Fair. Prizes for presentations are awarded, and finalists are chosen to take their projects to the Prince George's County STEM Fair.

Kenilworth Elementary Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program is designed to meet the needs of TAG identified students by providing an advanced, enriched, and academically rigorous program, and by addressing the educational needs of gifted students in a supportive nurturing environment.
