Arrival Zones

Kiss & Drive Zones

The Kiss & Drive Zones are marked by large orange cones with signs. These zones are for parents dropping off their children only. Children must ALWAYS be ready to exit the vehicle curbside (to the right of the vehicle). Staff will assist students in exiting the vehicle; adults should remain in the vehicle when using the Kiss & Drive Zones. These students will cross at the crosswalk and enter the building through the Main Entrance. No parking will be permitted in the Kiss & Drive Zones.

Parking

Parking will be limited to families of Kindergarten and PreKindergarten students only, displaying the Oaklands Parking Tag.  All other families are invited to participate in Kiss & Drive.

Walkers

A crossing guard is on duty at 13905-07 Briarwood Dr. from 7:00 am -7:25 am, to ensure your child’s safety crossing the street. Walking students enter the building through the Main Entrance.  Teachers and patrols are on duty from 7:15 am - 7:30 am.

Bus Riders

Students are assigned a bus via Bus Stop Finder. The students will only be permitted to ride their assigned bus. Please be at the bus stop 10 minutes prior to scheduled arrival time of the bus. Proper behavior on the school bus is a must in the interest of safety.  Bus transportation to and from school should be considered a privilege.  Students who misbehave on the bus may lose their privilege of riding on any school bus.  If a student loses his/her privilege of riding the bus it becomes the responsibility of the parents to transport the student to and from school.  Parents are responsible for the conduct of their children at the bus stop.

Parking in the Oaklands parking lot is extremely limited and not guaranteed.

Early Departure

Regular School Day - (7:15 am-1:45 pm) - Prior to 1:00 pm

Early dismissals are only permitted prior to the aforementioned time.  Following that time, you will have to wait for normal dismissal procedures.  This helps ensure a safe and smooth dismissal for all.

Unless the office has been notified in writing, no changes will be made to a student’s regular dismissal routine.  If you alter your child’s dismissal routine, please discuss the changes with your child in advance.  Since we have an early afternoon dismissal of 1:40 PM, we encourage parents to schedule most of your child’s medical and dental appointments after school.

Custodial Adult (legal guardian)

If it is necessary for a student to be dismissed early from school, custodial adults are asked to send notice via Class Dojo or a handwritten note to the child’s teacher notifying them of the change in schedule.  The note will be given to the school office for verification. When arriving to pick up children for early dismissal, all visitors must report to the front office and provide a government-issued form of identification.

Non-Custodial Adult (no legal rights to child)

If a child is being picked up by a non-custodial adult,  that person must be designated,  in writing, by the parent on our OES dismissal form, Class Dojo, or in writing. When arriving to pick up children for early dismissal, all visitors must report to the front office and provide a government-issued form of identification. The name of the individual reflected in the written permission MUST match the name reflected on the government-issued identification. Please refrain from using nicknames or terms of endearment when granting written permission.  Once this is complete and the identity of the non-custodial adult has been verified, the office staff will notify the teacher and the child will report to the Main Office.

Permission for non-custodial adults to pick up students will not be honored over the phone.   No verbal authorization to remove a child from the premises will be accepted. This precaution is in the interest of maintaining your child’s safety.

Delayed Opening / Emergency Closing Plans

  • The Superintendent generally makes decision concerning early morning school closing or delayed openings prior to 5 a.m.
  • An announcement is then provided to 38 radio stations and eight (8) television stations in the Washington metropolitan area.  The goal is to contact the stations in time for early morning broadcasts that begin between 5 and 6 a.m.
  • This information may also be accessed on the school system's web page at www.pgcps.org and/or www.schools-out.com.
  • After 6 a.m., staff and parents can also access the school system's Voice Mail Bulletin Board by calling 301-952-6000.  Wait for the opening message, and then press the number 1.
  • Watch PGCPS TV on Comcast Channel 96 or Verizon FIOS Channel 38

When schools are closed early or all day, all evening activities are cancelled, and school buildings are not available for after-school activities by other private or public organizations.  When schools have a two-hour delayed opening time, all half-day programs are cancelled, including Pre-Kindergarten.
