Policies & Procedures

Arrival

Classes begin promptly at 7:45 a.m., and all students must be in their classroom seats by this time.  Students who ride with parents or walk should arrive at school no earlier than 7:15 a.m.  Cars may not enter the bus lane between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.  Please do not drop students off on Glenn Dale Road.  Enter the middle lot and follow the flow of traffic, and exit carefully.  Please be courteous and careful.  Students should enter the building through the front doors next to the blue benches only.  Students eating breakfast should enter the building and go directly to the cafeteria.

Late Arrival

Students arriving after morning announcements (7:45 a.m.) must go to the office and obtain a tardy slip before going to class.  A parent/guardian must sign the child in at the office and indicate a reason for the late arrival.

Dismissal

Students will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m.  Parents should form a line in the middle parking lot. There will be someone on duty to direct the traffic for the pick up of children. Please be courteous to all staff as they are there to ensure the safety of all children.  For early dismissal we will ask you to fill out a form at the beginning of the year to designate three individuals to whom your child can be released. We will also ask for their ID If someone else is picking up your child, please send a note or call/fax the office. Students for early dismissal will not be called out of classrooms after 1:30 p.m. Students will remain in class until parents arrive in the school office.

Visitors

All visitors to the building, including parents, must come to the main office first.  Visitors must sign in and will be provided with a sticker to indicate that your presence is known. If you are in the building without a sticker, you will be stopped.  The main office will be open on school days from 7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

School Safety

Due to heavy bus traffic, it is impossible to allow cars to enter the upper parking lot while buses are loading and unloading.  It is safer for students coming in cars to be dropped off in our middle lot.  PARENTS!  PLEASE HELP US KEEP YOUR CHILD SAFE.  Do not drop your students off on Glenn Dale Road, because they automatically walk through the parking lot, and this is dangerous.

Bus Regulations

Students are assigned by computer to ride school buses that will pick them up and drop them off in close proximity to their homes or day care.  You can access information on specific bus stops and times at the Prince George’s County Public Schools Stopfinder web site.

Students are not allowed to ride a bus other than their assigned bus.  Students should be at the bus stop 5 to 10 minutes before the scheduled arrival time of the bus.  Students should wait for the bus in an orderly manner, following the directions of the patrols, if one is placed at the stop. It is essential that a safe and orderly environment is present on each school bus.

Referrals from bus drivers for misconduct may result in a suspension of the child's privilege of riding the bus.  Fighting will result in immediate suspension from the bus. The school cannot give permission for a parent to ride the school bus.  Riding a PGCPS school bus is a privilege, not a right.  Please call transportation at 301-952-6570, if you have additional questions.

Student Information Forms

During the first week of school, your child's teacher will be sending home three (3) Family Cards and an emergency form for you to complete.  Having this information returned promptly and correctly is of utmost importance.  A record of this information is kept in the school office in case you need to be contacted.  Please make sure all telephone numbers and addresses are accurate and clearly written.  Remember to put the name and telephone number of a person who can be contacted if you cannot be reached. Please notify the school if you change your address or telephone number during the year.

Breakfast and Lunch Programs

During the first week of school, all children will be given an application for free and reduced lunches to take home to their parents.  Only those who wish to apply need to return the forms.  Please keep in mind that we are required to provide every parent with the opportunity to apply.  Students may purchase lunch at school or bring their lunches from home.  Extra milk may be purchased as the student walks through the lunch line.  Food prices this year are:

 Breakfast:            Regular - $1.60         Reduced - $.30

 Lunch:                  Regular - $2.75         Reduced - $.40

Each student will have PIN # for their lunch account. Parents can deposit money into their student’s account by check or cash. Checks should have the student’s PIN # written on them, and be taken to the cafeteria first thing in the morning. Students may also pay cash as they go through the lunch line. They must still enter their PIN #. If their account is empty or low, the student will receive a note to take home.  Parents may check on the accounts at any time. Students eligible for reduced-price and free lunch must also enter their PIN #. A menu for both breakfast and lunch is sent home with students on a monthly basis.  Three choices will be offered to all students:  lunch main course -- hot lunch, cold sandwich, or salad plate; breakfast -- fruit cup, fresh fruit or juice.

Appropriate Dress

Glenn Dale Elementary is a Mandatory Uniform School. The uniform policy will be enforced for all students participating in Kindergarten through grade 5.  Each student must be dressed in the appropriate uniform and follow these rules:

  • Shirts should not include logos.
  • Shoes should be a solid color with no designs.
  • Patterned tights or socks not permitted.
  • Baggy pants are not acceptable.
  • Outerwear may only be worn to and from the building and at recess.  Outerwear is not to be worn in the classroom or cafeteria during lunch.

Birthdays and Celebrations

Birthday celebrations will no longer take place during lunch time.  Goodie bags may be dropped off to the student's classroom between the hours of 12:45 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Please inform the teachers 48 hours in advance when you would like to bring in goodie bags.  This will allow teachers to inform the office in advance.  No balloons should be brought into the building during celebrations.
