SSL Letter 22/23

November 14, 2022

Dear Parents and Guardians;

Maryland State Department of Education mandates all students to earn a minimum of twenty-four (24) independent service-learning hours as a graduation requirement. In an effort to ensure our students are on track for meeting the service-learning graduation requirement, they are now required to earn a minimum of eight (8) hours prior to entering high school.

School systems have the autonomy to tailor the requirement to meet the unique needs of students, schools and the community. We will continue to allow students the opportunity to participate in service-learning experiences that occur during the school day.

Throughout the school year, all middle and high school (6-12 grade) students can participate in one of the following school-based service-learning projects, known as PROJECT 24. Schools are permitted to create and implement specific projects which meet the needs of the community.

As our partners in education, feel free to submit ideas for service-learning projects and opportunities that enhance your school community to your School-Based Student Service-Learning Coordinator Mr. Sam Alpha, or via email to sam.alpha@pgcps.org.

We are committed to assist your scholar in making a difference in our community, understanding the value of service and meeting graduation requirements.

Sincerely,

Marcellus Clement

Principal
