Primary TAG Curriculum Overview
The Primary TAG curriculum is comprised of a core focus unit, a research focus unit, and a literacy focus unit. The challenging core focus unit is organized around the concept of“structure” and is interdisciplinary, incorporating science, math, social studies, and language arts activities. Students have many opportunities to engage in discussion and high level critical and creative thinking as they explore a variety of structures and things that have structure, including buildings, bridges, natural structures, skeletal systems, animals, language, and more. The curriculum includes opportunities for students to explore connections, implement theengineering design process, think conceptually, problem solve, reason, inquire, design, build, investigate, and discover the many things that impact structures.
During the research focus unit, students will have the opportunity to utilize the Big 6 Research Model to independently study a topic or issue of interest to them. The literacy focus includes the Junior Great Books Discussion Program in which students engage in interpretive reading and critical thinking in preparation for in-depth discussions of carefully selected, thought-provoking pieces of literature.
Cada plan de estudios TAG está compuesto por una unidad de enfoque central, una unidad de enfoque de investigación y una unidad de enfoque de alfabetización. La desafiante unidad de enfoque central está organizada en torno al concepto de "estructura" y es interdisciplinaria, incorporando actividades de ciencias, matemáticas, estudios sociales y lenguage. Intermediate TAG Curriculum Overview
The Intermediate TAG curriculum is comprised of a core focus unit, a research focus unit, and a literacy focus unit. The core focus unit is embedded with high level critical and creative thinking and is organized around a Makerspace focused on “E-Textiles” (electronics/circuits combined with textiles). The curriculum includes opportunities for students to explore connections, discuss, problem solve, reason, inquire, create, invent, and discover using a variety of tools and materials, including a microcontroller. The program is interdisciplinary, incorporating STEM, arts integration, and literacy activities, and is organized around the concept of relationships. As part of the core focus unit, students will also acquire skills in computer coding by working their way through MIT’s SCRATCH program on a weekly basis.
During the research focus unit, students will apply skills developed during the year to an issue of personal interest by conducting in-depth research and utilizing a “design thinking” model to develop original products and prototypes that solve a problem. Student-created products and prototypes will be shared via a culminating showcase. Finally, the literacy focus includes the Junior Great Books Discussion Program in which students engage in interpretive reading and critical thinking in preparation for in-depth discussions of carefully selected, thought-provoking pieces of literature.
Cada currículo TAG se integra de una unidad de conceptos básicos, una unidad centrada en la investigación y otra centrada en la alfabetización. Se han incorporado muchas actividades de análisis creativo y crítico a la unidad de conceptos básicos. Esta unidad se organizó en torno a un Makerspace de “textiles electrónicos” (componentes y circuitos electrónicos combinados con objetos textiles). El currículo incluye oportunidades para que los estudiantes exploren nexos, conversen, solucionen problemas, razonen, pregunten, creen, inventen y descubran por medio de diversos materiales y herramientas, incluido un microcontrolador. El programa es interdisciplinario. Se han incorporado actividades de STEM, alfabetización y arte, y se estructura en torno al concepto de relaciones. Asimismo, como parte de la unidad de conceptos básicos, los estudiantes adquirirán conocimiento sobre la codificación informática al trabajar semanalmente con el programa SCRATCH elaborado por el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts (MIT).
Durante la unidad centrada en métodos investigativos, los estudiantes aplicarán conocimiento obtenido durante el año a un tema de interés personal al llevar a cabo investigaciones detalladas y utilizar un modelo de “análisis de diseño” para desarrollar productos y prototipos originales para solucionar un problema. Se compartirán los productos y prototipos creados por los estudiantes en una exposición final. Por último, la unidad centrada en la alfabetización incluye el Programa de Conversación sobre Grandes Libros para Niños, en el que los estudiantes participarán en actividades de interpretación de lectura y análisis crítico en preparación para conversaciones sobre obras literarias cuidadosamente seleccionadas que invitan a la reflexión.
