PBIS

In an effort to promote and sustain positive behaviors at Panorama Elementary School, we have implemented several evidence-based behavior management strategies that form our Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS) program. We integrate our Character Education values into this program. We understand that consistency, routines, and continual practice are not only pre-requisites for constructive behavior, but they are building blocks for a high level of academic teaching and learning. As Harry Wong mentions in his popular book The First Days of School, “For a child to unlearn an old behavior and replace with a new one, the new behavior must be repeated on an average of twenty eight times.” We implement this notion of consistency and routine into our daily practices. Knowledge of PBIS expectations and appropriate behaviors are innate in our students; with consistent modeling and practice they learn and demonstrate appropriate behaviors quickly and effectively

The PBIS and Character Education programs have the classroom teacher issuing Panorama coupons (token economy) in order to reinforce and reward students for positive behavior.  Ingrained in this behavior are our core PBIS rules: Being Respectful, Being responsible, Being Safe, and Being Ready to Learn/Go to College/Technical School. Each month we display and model a specific character trait for the students to practice. The character trait is defined, modeled, practiced through role-playing and reinforced through PBIS coupons given to students “caught” displaying the trait.

These are the following P.B.I.S. activities that we have had throughout the school year.

  • Organized play
  • Jump Roping
  • Basketball
  • Duck, Duck, Goose
  • Races
  • Dances
  • Active Movement
  • Blowing Bubbles
  • Chalk play and design
  • Artwork
  • Baking
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Gardening
  • Making Terrariums
  • Mathematical Games and Activities
  • Science Experiments and Inquiry Activities

Panorama Elementary School students genuinely look forward to these activities throughout the school year as they promote self-confidence, leadership, social development, and a lifelong love of learning.
