The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle-level students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence in five areas: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These principles have guided NJHS membership since its founding in 1929.
NJHS membership is both an honor and a responsibility. Students are selected based on their academic achievement, personal character, leadership abilities, commitment to service, and contributions to their school and community. Once inducted, members are expected to continue demonstrating these qualities throughout their membership.
Scholarship
Students must demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and maintain the required academic standards established by the chapter.
Service
Students demonstrate a commitment to helping others through participation in community service, school activities, and volunteer opportunities.
Leadership
Students show leadership by taking initiative, accepting responsibility, supporting others, and contributing positively to school and community projects.
Character
Students demonstrate integrity, honesty, respect, responsibility, and positive behavior while maintaining a strong disciplinary record.
Citizenship
Students demonstrate a commitment to being responsible members of their school and community by supporting activities and actions that promote a positive environment.
The National Junior Honor Society chapter at Maya Angelou French Immersion School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. At MAFI, NJHS members exemplify academic excellence, leadership, service, character, and citizenship while serving as role models within our school community.
Students in grades 6–8 are eligible for membership consideration. To meet the scholarship requirement, students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 (non-rounded) or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Each spring, students who meet the academic eligibility requirement are invited to complete a Candidate Form. This form provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership experiences, service activities, and commitment to the NJHS pillars.

The Faculty Council carefully reviews all information, and a majority vote is required for selection. Students are notified of their selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
NJHS membership requires students to continue demonstrating excellence in all five pillars after induction. Members are expected to:
NJHS members may also have opportunities to earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours through approved service activities and chapter projects.
Students who are selected and approved for membership are formally inducted into NJHS during a spring induction ceremony. This ceremony recognizes students’ accomplishments and officially welcomes new members into the chapter.
Regardless of when a student is selected, all NJHS members are expected to uphold the responsibilities and standards of membership throughout their time in the organization.
NJHS members must continue to demonstrate excellence in scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship in order to maintain membership.
Students who do not meet membership expectations may receive a written warning from the chapter advisor and will be given a reasonable opportunity to correct the deficiency. In cases involving serious violations of school rules or the law, a warning may not be required.
Students facing dismissal from NJHS have the right to a hearing before the Faculty Council. Students may also appeal the Faculty Council’s decision to the building principal.
